Detoxification

Toxins are everywhere in the world around us.  They get into the food we eat, the water we drink and even the air we breathe.  Toxins can accumulate in the body and cause disease and makes the body less efficient.  Symptoms that the body may be in need of detoxification include an increase in unexplained fatigue, irritated skin, allergies, bags under the eyes, bloating, menstrual problems and mental confusion.

The human body has its own natural healing system that helps get rid of harmful toxins.  Sometimes, however, we need to help rid our body of built up toxins. Detoxification works by helping the body with its own natural cleaning process.  The body eliminates toxins through the kidneys, intestines, skin, lymph nodes and lungs.  When the system is overloaded or weakened the filtering process doesn't remove all impurities and toxins can accumulate.

Popular detox programs are often an intensive 7 day program which starts with fasting and then involves a strict diet that allows the digestive system to rest. There are also some supplements available to help speed up the detox process.  Be sure to consult with your doctor before beginning this regime and do not attempt it if you are pregnant or if your immune system is compromised.

You can help your body get rid of toxins naturally by following these guidelines:

  • Drink plenty of water.  Water is a natural cleanser for cells.  Drinking a lot of water will make it easier for the body to naturally cleanse itself.
  • Remove excess toxin producers from your life.  This includes cigarettes, alcohol, caffeine, refined sugar and saturated fats.  All of these add up and make it more difficult for your body to cleanse itself.
  • Minimize the use of chemical based household cleaners and personal hygiene products.  These give off unwanted toxins that the body can absorb through the skin or get through inhalation.
  • Get plenty of exercise. Exercise helps keep the oxygen circulating through the bloodstream and makes you breathe deeply, cleansing the lungs.
  • Remove toxins on the skin by sloughing the skin weekly to get rid of dead skin cells.  Use a special skin brush made for this purpose.
  • Get enough sleep.  The body uses this down time to replenish itself.  If you deprive it of sleep it can't properly rid itself of toxins.
  • Drink green tea.  It provides anti-oxidants that help the body reduce toxins.
  • Eat foods that are high in fiber. High fiber foods are natural detox agents. Foods high in fiber include whole grains, brown rice and many vegetables and fruits.
  • Make sure you get enough vitamin C in your diet.  It helps the liver produce compounds that fight toxins.
